Let's spend some time examining content provided by the various providers and see what is available for use from each source.
For this portion of the workshop, let's focus on The Civil Rights Movement. We will use this topic as the basis for our examination of the content and available resources that can be used in your classroom.
To begin, let's look quickly at Shifts 5 and 6 before we begin.
Shift 5 asks us to have students create written products in which they pull information from various sources to inform or make an argument.
Shift 6 asks that students develop their vocabulary so they can access more challenging, grade-appropriate texts.
Keeping the shifts in mind, let's take a look at the content available in the following media products:
BrainPOP
CCC!
Vital on Teacher's Domain
Learn360
As you view the content, please be thinking about various activities you could have your students do in preparation for a final written project on The Civil Rights Movement.
In pairs (One ELA person and one SS person), please take five minutes and discuss the benefits and drawbacks to using the follow-up activities presented by the various content providers. Using the sheet of large paper and a marker provided, create a T-chart to share with the rest of the group.
With your partner, take a few minutes to discuss possible writing assignments you could create that would:
Incorporate at least 2 of the sources you reviewed
Inform or Argue
Be of a prescribed length
Incorporate vocabulary acquired from the content
Be prepared to share out with the rest of the group.
